Why Convert JPEG to EXR file?

JPEG is a standard-range, lossy photo format. EXR is what VFX and rendering pipelines use: a high dynamic range container that can store brightness and color well past what a display shows, which is why compositing software expects it.

A standard-range JPEG has no extra highlight or shadow information to recover, so the result is an EXR with ordinary range inside.
