Convert.Online Report · October 2026 What 320,000 File Conversion Requests Reveal We looked at every conversion request made on Convert.Online since spring 2025: 319,681 requests across 1,895 format pairs. Two-thirds involved images. The biggest single problem was the iPhone's photo format. The web's newest image format was mostly being converted away from. And the third most requested conversion was into a video format made for cheap MP4 players two decades ago. 319,681conversion requests 1,895format pairs requested 64%started from an image 17%started from an iPhone HEIC photo The 10 most requested conversions HEIC → JPEG32,167WebP → JPG16,480MP4 → AMV14,750HEIC → JPG13,029WebP → JPEG11,556HEIC → PNG9,191PNG → WebP7,832JPG → JPEG6,914M4A → MP36,866JPG → WebP6,656 1 iPhone photos are the most common reason people convert a file HEIC, the format iPhones have saved photos in since 2017, was the starting point of 55,463 requests: 17.3% of everything, more than any other format, including PNG and JPG. Almost none of them wanted another modern format. 98.1% asked for JPEG, JPG or PNG: the formats every computer, website and form already accepts. It was the third most common source format, at 36,222 requests. 77.4% of those asked for JPG or JPEG. The two names are a historical accident from when Windows file extensions were limited to three letters. Most of these come from a form or a program that accepts only one of the two spellings. Converting works. Renaming the file would work too, which is not true for almost any other pair of formats. We wrote about why: Renaming a File Extension Doesn't Convert It. 4 The third most requested conversion is MP4 to AMV AMV is a low-resolution video format created in the mid-2000s for inexpensive portable MP3/MP4 players. It was the target of 15,965 requests. MP4 → AMV alone accounted for 14,750, making it the third most requested conversion of any kind, ahead of every document conversion. Methodology Source: conversion requests made on convert.online through the website, API and MCP server between April 2025 and October 2026. What is counted: requests. A request is counted when someone asks for a conversion, before it runs, so the figures measure demand, not completed conversions. No file content was looked at. Only the source and target formats are recorded. Converted files are deleted automatically after 24 hours. Percentages are of all 319,681 requests unless stated otherwise.
