Why Convert PDF to MAP file?

MAP here is ImageMagick's colormap format, not a geographic map: a palette of colours followed by one index per pixel. Converting a PDF to MAP renders each page as an image and then stores it in that indexed form, which is what palette-based displays, firmware graphics and some image-processing pipelines need when they are handed a document page rather than a photo.

Rendering a page is a one-way step. Text becomes pixels and can no longer be searched or copied, and everything is reduced to a limited set of colours — fine for text, diagrams and line art, which use few colours anyway, less so for photos inside the document. A PDF with several pages comes back as a ZIP with one MAP file per page. MAP stores no header, so the page dimensions are not recorded; note them, because whatever reads the files back has to be told the width and height.
