Why Convert ODG to EPS file?

ODG is the drawing format of LibreOffice Draw and the wider OpenDocument family — diagrams, floor plans, logos, flowcharts, all stored as real vector shapes. The trouble starts when the file has to leave that world: print shops, older layout software and academic typesetting tools often want EPS, and they will not open an ODG at all.

Because both formats are vector, the shapes stay shapes and the artwork scales to any size without going soft. Two things do not travel well. EPS has no notion of transparency, so semi-transparent fills and soft shadows have to be flattened and may look harder than they did in Draw. Fonts are the other trap: unless the text is converted to outlines, the machine opening the EPS needs the same typeface or it will substitute another and shift your layout. Checking those two points after conversion is usually all the proofing an ODG drawing needs.
