Why Convert JFIF to DDS file?

JFIF is simply a JPEG file carrying the older JPEG File Interchange Format header, which is why Windows sometimes saves web images with that extension instead of .jpg. DDS is a very different thing: a texture container for DirectX and game engines, which store images in GPU-ready block compression rather than as ordinary pictures.

The conversion makes the image usable as a texture, but it is not lossless. The source JPEG was already lossy, and DDS compression adds a second pass, so flat colors and sharp edges can pick up visible artifacts. Textures are also happiest with power-of-two dimensions, so an arbitrary photo size may need resizing before an engine accepts it.
