What is MAP ?

MAP is ImageMagick's colormap format: a palette of colours followed by one index per pixel that says which palette entry to draw. The file has no header, so the image width and height are not stored in it. It is an output format for indexed-colour work such as embedded displays, retro graphics and custom image pipelines.

Why Convert DXF to MAP file?

DXF is the interchange format for CAD drawings — lines, arcs, layers and dimensions stored as geometry. MAP, despite the name, is not a mapping or GIS format: it is ImageMagick's colormap format, a palette of colours followed by one index per pixel. Drawing the geometry as pixels is a one-way step. The upside is that technical drawings use very few colours, so they fit a palette with little or no visible loss.
